PreSchool Teacher

Job Title: Preschool Teacher | EastLake Children's Center

Level: $20.25 per hour

Hours: up to 39 hours a week

The teacher is responsible for the general supervision and management of a group of children between the ages of two through five.


Qualifications:

The person hired for this position must be professionally prepared as a teacher of preschool age children, especially in the field of child development, and must be able to meet the requirements of the licensing agency. This person must be a sensitive and mature individual who is able to relate well to both children and adults, and must be willing to support the philosophy of the preschool and kindergarten program.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Plan, supervise and implement the program for the children that meet the emotional, physical, intellectual and social needs of both the individual and the group. Such a program is to be in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the center.
  • Prepare a warm and safe environment that is orderly, clean and appealing, and which permits the child to grow and explore.
  • Interact with the children and encourage their involvement in planned or spontaneous activities.
  • Consider individual children in relationship to their cultural and socioeconomic background; treating all children with dignity and respect.
  • Observe, record and report significant individual and group behavior. Assess the developmental level of individual children and conduct parent conferences on a child’s adjustment and behavior as needed.
  • Maintain and update appropriate records and files and be knowledgeable of the information in each child’s personal file.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents and/or guardians. Be sensitive to issues of confidentiality.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings. If unable to attend, notify the Director ahead of time and be responsible for obtaining the information presented at the meeting.
  • Effectively use the services of classroom assistants and support staff.
  • Assist children with toileting/diapering needs including changing clothes when necessary.
  • Assume joint housekeeping duties as needed to maintain cleanliness of individual rooms, overall facility and outdoor play areas.
  • Assist in and attend public relations events sponsored by the program.
  • Participate in recommended training programs, conferences, courses and other aspects of professional growth.
  • Spend a reasonable amount of time in preparation for meetings, open house, other special events and in emergency situations.
  • Use craft and classroom supplies in a manner that is not wasteful and maintain them in an orderly manner.
  • Read and impart the policies of the staff and parent handbook.
  • Prepare and maintain a file for a substitute teacher that includes lesson plans for three days.
  • Accept work assigned to cover staffing as needed for center.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Director.

Procedural Guidelines

  • Perform “well child” check as children arrive.
  • Confer with the Director prior to any negative written or oral comment about the child to the parents.
  • Notify parents and get proper written authorization prior to a field trip.
  • Discuss with the Director any request to transfer a child to another classroom or to trade duties with another staff member.
  • Report all significant injuries/accidents to the Director or person in charge at the time of the incident, and to the parents. Fill out any proper forms.
  • Obtain approval from the Director for the purchase of any classroom supplies and materials for which you are requesting reimbursement. Complete appropriate reimbursement forms. Any item paid for with center funds will be considered the property of the center.
  • Communicate to staff for early/late children any information or messages to and/or from parents or guardians.

Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands: Caring for children can be physically demanding. Childcare staff may be lifting and carrying children and equipment and will spend time sitting on the floor or child-sized furniture. Staff will be expected to clean and maintain equipment and facility. Childcare staff may come in contact with children who are ill and/or contagious and must take precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents, staff, and themselves.

  • Physical Requirements:
    • Require vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.
    • Require mobility of arms to reach annd dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
    • Perform lifting, pushing, and/or pulling which does not exceed 50 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the job. 
    • Is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. 
    • Required to stand for prolonged periods. 
    • Require mobility for frequent bending, squatting, and twisting.

  • Environmental Conditions: Childcare center staff will be working in a busy and occasionally noisy environment. A number of activities and situations will be happening at once and staff will need to supervise all children at all times as well as be prepared to handle accidents and emergencies at any time. Staff may also experience sensory demands experiencing smells associated with toileting and children who are ill. Caring for children can be stressful. Childcare staff must ensure that children are supervised at all times and that children are involved in safe and appropriate activities.
